How to sell access to a private Telegram channel

The whole job, end to end: what a paid channel actually is, what has to happen when somebody pays, and what happens when they stop.

A paid Telegram channel is not one thing. It is three, and most of the pain of running one comes from treating it as one.

There is the channel itself, which is just a private channel you already know how to make. There is taking the money, which is a payment provider's job. And there is the door: letting somebody in the moment they pay, and taking them back out the moment they stop. The third one is the work, and it is the one people underestimate.

What has to happen when somebody pays

The moment a payment clears, four things need to be true, and they need to stay true without anybody watching.

  • They are in the channel, within seconds rather than whenever you next check your phone.
  • The purchase is written down against a person, so you can answer "did they pay" in a year's time.
  • They know they are in, in a message they did not have to ask for.
  • The date their access ends is recorded, so it can end.

Doing this by hand works for about twenty subscribers. At fifty it is a part time job, and at two hundred it is somebody else's full time job. Worse, the failures are silent: the person who paid on a Saturday night and was still waiting on Monday will not usually complain. They will ask for a refund.

The part everybody gets wrong

Letting people IN is the easy half. Taking them out is what decides whether the thing is a business.

If a lapsed subscriber keeps their access, your paying subscribers are subsidising the ones who stopped — and word gets round faster than you would like. If a paying subscriber is removed by mistake, you have taken money for something you then took away, which is the one mistake that turns a customer into a refund and a bad review at once.

So access should be RECONCILED rather than triggered. The difference matters. A trigger fires once, and if it fails — the network blinked, the bot was rate limited, Telegram was having a morning — it has failed for ever and nothing knows. Reconciling means something keeps asking "who should be in each channel, and who actually is", and closes the gap. A missed message heals itself on the next pass.

If a missed webhook means somebody stays locked out until they email you, the
system is not finished.

Where the money should go

Straight to you. Not through a platform, not into a balance you withdraw on Fridays.

Connect your own Stripe, PayPal or crypto account and every payment settles where it always would have, under your own terms of service, with your own refund policy and your own dispute process. What the software should be doing is watching for the payment and opening the door — not standing between you and the buyer.

This matters more than it sounds. Payment accounts get frozen; when it is your account, it is your relationship with your provider to fix. When it is a platform's, you are one of a thousand tickets.

What to set up, in order

  • A bot. It is the thing that can actually add and remove people, and it takes a couple of minutes with @BotFather.
  • A channel, with the bot made an administrator that can invite and remove.
  • A plan: a price, how often it repeats, and which channels it opens.
  • A payment account of your own.

That is the whole list. Everything after it — reminders, coupons, broadcasts, tags — is about making more from what you have already built, and none of it matters until the four things above are true.
